Surgery (soft tissue, orthopaedic, laparoscopy)

Our vets are experienced across a range of routine and complex surgeries, and our facilities are well-equipped to care for your pet.

Our team includes vets who are experienced in a wide range of surgical procedures including tumour removal, and gastrointestinal, rectal and eye surgery.

Orthopaedics

We can provide a range of orthopaedic surgery, as well as providing support and pain management for those patients with lifelong conditions such as arthritis.

We have an Advanced Practitioner in orthopaedics who visits our practices and operates on the more complicated fracture cases.

Laparoscopy

Laparoscopy is a form of minimally invasive surgery which allows us to explore the abdomen by two small incisions and is an alternative to the more traditional surgical method.

A camera is introduced as well as fine instruments allowing a variety of procedures to be performed.

It has been used in human medicine for a long time and the benefits are widely recognised in our veterinary patients too.

Surgeries we can perform using laparoscopy include:

  • Spay/ovariectomy
  • Retained testicles.
  • Abdominal organ biopsy
  • Exploratory surgery

The advantages of this technique over traditional open surgery include:

  • Significantly smaller incisions
  • Smaller surgical wounds mean your pet can get back to normal much quicker than after conventional surgery, often without the need for prolonged rest or pain relief
  • Less painful
  • Lower infection risk
  • Better visualisation for the surgeon and therefore safer – the ability to see the surgical field in close detail means small blood vessels are magnified and therefore any bleeding is quickly identified and stopped

Patients can often go home on the same day as the procedure, and a medical pet shirt is also provided at the time of discharge.

As specialised equipment and training are required, this procedure currently has to take place at our Wimborne practice, but it is available to all of our patients.

If you would like to find out more about this procedure, our team is here to help.
